چکیده

Received (received date) Revised (revised date) Communicated by (Name of Editor) ABSTRACT PVM for Java (JPVM) is a parallel programming environment that provides a set of Parallel Virtual Machine (PVM)-like class libraries developed using Java. JPVM inherits the attributes of Java, especially Java support of heterogeneous system. However, it also has the disadvantage of poor performance when compared to native codes. Java performancehas been considerablyimprovedwith the recent introductionof Just in Time (JIT) compilers. This paper evaluates JPVM, with and without JIT compilation, using some well-known parallel processing benchmarks. It will also highlight some of the areas that limit the use of Java in parallel processing on distributed systems. The objective of the paper is to provide some performance indications of using Java in network-based parallel computing environments.

JPVM: network parallel computing in Java

The JPVM library is a software system for explicit message-passing based distributed memory MIMD parallel programming in Java. The library supports an interface similar to the C and Fortran interface provided by the Parallel Virtual Machine (PVM) system, but with syntax and semantics modifications afforded by Java and better matched to Java programming styles. The similarity between JPVM and th...

JAPE: The Java Parallel Environment

This paper presents the design and implementation of a JAva Parallel Environment (JAPE) which is based on JPVM. Its goals are to provide Java with full PVM message-passing functions and to improve the performance of JPVM. Particularly, the improvements of JPVM by parallel task spawning and message-packed broadcast is described. These improvements are tested on benchmark programs. The results sh...

Evaluation of scheduling solutions in parallel processing using DEA FDH model

This paper gives a new application of DEA to evaluate the scheduling solutions of parallel processing. It evaluates the scheduling solutions of parallel processing using the non-convex DEA model, FDH model. By introducing each solution of parallel processing scheduling as a DMU with some relevant inputs and outputs this paper shows that how the most efficient schedule(s) can be identified.

Development and Performance Evaluation of a Lan-based Edge-detection Tool

This paper presents a description and performance evaluation of an efficient and reliable edge-detection tool that utilize the growing computational power of local area networks (LANs). It is therefore referred to as LAN-based edge detection (LANED) tool. The processor-farm methodology is used in porting the sequential edge-detection calculations to run efficiently on the LAN. In this methodolo...

Communication Performance of Java-Based Parallel Virtual Machines

Message passing libraries such as Parallel Virtual Machine (PVM) and Message Passing Interface (MPI) provide a common Application Programming Interface (API) to implement parallel programs across multiple computers. Such libraries provide a means to program a collection of normally independent computers to work cooperatively on a single computation. However, for programs written in C and Fortra...
